The U-505 Submarine

One of the businesses located on the East Side along the Calumet River was the Great Lakes Dredge and Dock
Company.  One of the projects which this company was responsible for was the preparation and moving of the U-505
submarine to the Museum of Science and Industry.  This project occurred in 1954 and involved moving the captured
German submarine across Lake Shore Drive.  The Southeast Historical Museum has copies of photos that were taken
