On September 7, 2012 The Illinois State Educator Preparation and Licensure Board (SEPLB) approved Northeastern Illinois University's new principal preparation Masters Degree Program in School Leadership leading to the new State of Illinois Principal Endorsement. Students who complete the Master's degree program in School Leadership at NEIU matriculate to positions of leadership in their schools and communities and receive the new State of Illinois Principal Endorsement.

The sequence of courses and the objectives of the School Leadership Program have been designed to develop exemplary school leaders and to foster their continued growth and effectiveness. Our program includes three internship experiences, thus providing for a unique blend of theory and practice in preparation for positions of leadership. Students who successfully complete the course concentration in School Leadership will develop competencies in effective leadership, educational management practices, and staff development at the school level. Completion of the twelve-course program will result in the award of an M.A. degree in School Leadership. This concentration also leads to the new State of Illinois Principal Endorsement.

The program is outlined in our Program Handbook. Candidates desiring admission to the Masters Degree in School Leadership program begin by completing an application for and obtaining Northeastern Illinois University's Student at Large (SAL) designated status. This status allows students to enroll inup to three courses without full admission to the Graduate School. Students admitted as a SAL then use the program's first introductory course, LEAD 424 (Introduction to the Evaluation of Certified Support Staff), to complete the Graduate School application as the class professor provides time to assist students with the details of the formal program application process. Research cites what common sense dictates - teachers are the single most important variable in the impact of student performance followed by principal effectiveness. A principal's job is to hire and support the best teachers.The public expects it and the process of hiring the best teachers begins with an administrator's own schooling his/her institution of higher learning and its admission standards and requirements. As such, schools will always need great school leaders.
