Congratulations, August and December 2012 Graduates!

Nearly 1,500 students graduated in August and December of 2012, and 715 of them participated in the December 16, 2012, commencement exercises. The 2012 Distinguished Alumna, Ann Kalayil, Ph.D., gave remarks at the ceremony, and J. Todd Phillips, vice president of local markets and sales strategy at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, gave the keynote address. 

NEIU also celebrated the naming of emeritus faculty, which included Jill Althage, professor emerita, Ronald Williams Library; Bradley F. Baker, associate professor emeritus and dean emeritus, Ronald Williams Library; Steven M. Brown, professor emeritus, educational leadership and development; Maria Korkatsch-Groszdo, professor emeritus, teacher education; and Susan E. Rosa, professor emerita, history (awarded posthumously). 

NEIU Welcomes Richard Helldobler as New Provost

In January, Northeastern Illinois University welcomed Richard Helldobler, Ph.D., as provost and vice president for academic affairs. Helldobler's extensive experience in higher education leadership includes more than 20 years of demonstrated success collaborating with faculty and staff to meet institutional goals. Read More

President Hahs Participates in Discussion on Immigration Reform

At the invitation of U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, NEIU President Sharon Hahs (pictured right, center) participated in a discussion about comprehensive immigration reform at Instituto del Progreso Latino in Chicago on Monday, February 4.  Read More

 

Alumni Receive Leadership Appointments within the Illinois General Assembly

Congratulations to three new NEIU alumni leaders in the Illinois General Assembly:

Illinois State Senator Pamela J. Althoff (M.Ed. '78 Special Education) has been appointed Minority Caucus Chair.

Illinois State Senator Iris Y. Martinez (B.A. '09 University Without Walls) has been appointed Majority Caucus Whip.

Illinois State Representative Sara K. Feigenholtz (B.A. '78 Political Science and Speech and Performing Arts) has been appointed Assistant Majority Leader.

 

Two COBM Faculty Become CPAs

Two College of Business and Management (COBM) faculty members recently passed the four sections of the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. Alireza Dorestani, assistant professor, accounting, and Essam Elshafie, associate professor, accounting, are both now Certified Public Accountants. This Spring, the COBM will begin offering a CPA exam review course series to prepare students who plan to take the exam.

 

News from the NEIU Alumni Association

The NEIU Alumni Association and the 2013 Chuck Kane Memorial Golf Outing Committee invite all alumni to attend a reception for former varsity athletes and HPERA (Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics) alumni. The event will be held at the Nil Tap (an NEIU alumna-owned establishment), located at 5734 N. Elston in Chicago on Thursday, February 28 from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. Free pizza and a cash bar will be offered. RSVP by Friday, February 22 to alumni@neiu.edu or (773) 442-4205.

Presidential Scholarships Available for this Fall

NEIU is now accepting applications through February 15 for its prestigious Presidential Scholarship awards. These scholarships provide full tuition, fees and a book allowance for four academic years. Prospective applicants must plan to graduate from an Illinois high school, enroll at NEIU in the fall semester, have a minimum ACT composite score of 27 and have a cumulative GPA of 3.35. Read More

NEIU recently updated its Admissions Facebook page. Prospective students and their families can now request information, schedule a visit and apply directly from the page.

2013  International Business Conference: Latin America

On March 4 - 5, the College of Business and Management will host its annual International Business Conference. Focusing on a different region of the world each year, the conference brings together professionals from across the U.S. and around the globe, providing an opportunity to increase our understanding of today's diverse world. This year's focus will be on Latin America. Read More

Alumni are invited to the Second Annual
Mini-Kane Mini-Golf Outing

Alumni are invited to join us for the Mini-Kane Mini-Golf outing on Thursday, April 4. Mini-Kane is a one-day mini-golf event held on NEIU's main campus. Holes are designed and hosted by student groups, clubs and organizations.

All proceeds from the Kane Golf Outing and Mini-Kane go to benefit deserving NEIU students. To date, Kane has funded more than 110 scholarships for students.  

Sponsorship opportunities for businesses and individuals are now available for the 41st annual Chuck Kane Memorial Golf Outing. Sponsorship levels range from $350 - $10,000. Read More

NEXUS 2013: International Water Summit

On March 6 - 7, NEIU will host the International Water Nexus Summit. At this event, the nexuses of water with conservation, agriculture, food/health/sustainability, urban planning, energy, economics, and ethics will be presented and discussed.

Ann P. Kalayil (B.S. '82 Computer Science), 2012 Distinguished Alumna of the Year, will provide the keynote address at the summit. Kalayil serves as regional administrator of the U.S. General Service Administration's Great Lakes Region.

Also attending as a featured speaker at the summit will be Michael Martinez (M.A. '98 Geography and Environmental Studies), who serves as special assistant at the United States Department of Agriculture.  Read More

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Tribute

On Tuesday, January 22, NEIU paid tribute to The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Titled "The Legacy Lives On," the celebration honored the 50th anniversary of King's iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. The program included a keynote address, performances by the NEIU Chamber Singers and the Black Heritage Gospel Choir, and Ayodele Drum and Dance. A panel on "Living the Legacy on Campus: Then and Now" was held, as was a roundtable discussion titled "Moving Beyond the Black/White Binary." Read More

Calling for a vote on a key college affordability and transparency bill, Lt. Governor Sheila Simon marked her 12th and final College Affordability Summit with a visit to Northeastern Illinois University on Wednesday, December 12. Read More
