Who needs to take a Placement Test?

All incoming freshmen need to take Math and English Placement tests. Transfer students needing to take a Math or English course at NEIU will take the respective test/s. Please follow the links Math Placement Test and English Placement Test for more information.

Can I use my ACT, AP or CLEP credits for the Math and English courses instead of taking the Placement test?

Yes, you can. Please follow the link to ACT, AP or CLEP credit information.

Can I register for the Placement Test over the phone or in person?

Yes, you can register for the placement test by calling us at (773) 442-5293 or come to the office located on the 5th floor of C-building. Our office hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.. You can also register for the Placement Tests through this page.

Does the test cost anything?

No, the test is offered free to all incoming students who are taking it first time at NEIU.

What should I bring to the test?

You need to bring a photo ID (example: NEIU student ID, High school student ID, driver's license, state ID or a passport) and NEIU student ID# with you.

Can I use a calculator or dictionary in the test?

No calculators or any kind of study aid is allowed.

How long will the Placement test take?

However, the Placement test isn’t a timed test, students generally take 2-2.5 hours to finish their test if they are taking all 3 tests.

Can I park my car in campus parking lots on the day of the test?

Yes, you can park your car on campus in the Parking Facility or at any level II parking lots with a daily parking permit that you can buy ($5/day) on the day of the test from Daily Parking Permit Machine located in the Lot H (at the south end of the campus) or from the parking office located in the first floor of the Parking Facility. Can I bring my family, friend or a child to the test?

No children or guest can accompany you in the room while you test however they can wait in the waiting area only.

Can I still take the test even I'm not registered for the test?

Yes, you can show up as a walk-in. Due to the limited number of seats available, it is strongly recommended that you register for the test ahead of time so you'll have a seat reserved for yourself on the day of the test and so we have your exact testing information.
