Master of Arts in Gifted Education

All children need opportunities to learn and to be supported in academic, social/emotional, and physical areas.  For learners with gifts/talents it is essential that the learning environment is designed and structured for growth to occur. The Department currently offers the Master of Arts in Gifted Education program to address the needs of advanced learners. This program is designed for educators/parents who are interested in advanced preparation supporting, teaching, and guiding gifted children and their families. A valid Illinois Professional Educator License is required for entry into the program.

Coursework Requirements & Sequence (30 credit hours*)

Fall I

GIFT 450  Psychology of Individuals Who are Gifted and Talented (3)

Spring I

SPED 500  Research I:  Critical Writing and Research in Special Education (3) 

Summer I

Appropriate required coursework (below):

GIFT 454   Gifted Education Seminar: Teaching Gifted Students in the Inclusive Classroom (3) 
SPED 451   Creativity (3)

Fall II

GIFT 453  Seminar in Curriculum Methods and Materials for the Gifted
(Prerequisite:  GIFT 450 or Gifted Education Seminar)

Spring II

GIFT 452  Education of Individuals Who are Gifted and Talented (3)
(Prerequisite:  GIFT 453)

Summer II

GIFT 454  Gifted Education Seminar: Teaching Gifted Students in the Inclusive Classroom (3)
GIFT 462  Identifying and Providing for Underserved Gifted Students (3)
