Introduction 

The Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) is a satellite facility of Northeastern Illinois University, located on the Southside of Chicago, approximately twenty-one miles southeast of the main campus. CCICS houses the Department of Educational Inquiry & Curriculum Studies Inner City Studies Education (EICS ICSE) program, an academic program within the College of Education. Through its interdisciplinary curricula, EICS ICSE examines the major social, political, economic, and cultural forces that impact inner city communities in America, and around the world. The program is committed to training and retraining persons who desire to live and/or work in the inner city. CCICS also offers a wide range of classes in the arts and sciences drawn from the university's General Education Program.

Admission to the Program 

Specific Goals of the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Inner City Studies Education

1. Examine introductory theories and methodologies of analyzing inner city communities throughout the world.

2. Examine introductory literature of the scholarship and activism associated with addressing the current trends and developments related to the multiplicity of issues and challenges in the inner city including the impact of technology and media.

3. Demonstrate their understanding of inner city issues through written and oral communication, and web-based technologies.

4. Prepare ICSE majors to pursue graduate degrees in Inner City Studies Education and other related fields.

Northeastern Illinois University requires that students take a double major, major and a minor, or a minor and a set of cognate courses. The EICS ICSE academic program offers the following options:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Inner City Studies, with a second major/minor
  • Master of Arts in Inner City Studies
  • Minor in Inner City Careers

The Center also offers courses necessary to complete the university's General Education requirements.

  • EICS ICSE 301 Racism in Theory and Fact (3  Cr)
  • EICS ICSE 302 The Inner City Community (3  Cr)
  • EICS ICSE 303 Theory and Methodology in Ethnic Group Research (3  Cr)
  • EICS ICSE 304 Communication in the Inner City (3  Cr)
  • Electives (12  Cr) Chosen in consultation with an advisor, from undergraduate course offerings in Inner City Studies Education.

Total: 30 Cr.

Inner City Studies Education majors must apply and be admitted to the College of Education by the time they have completed 60 hours.
