Introduction

The Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) is a satellite facility of Northeastern Illinois University, located on the South side of Chicago, approximately twenty-one miles southeast of the Main Campus at 700 E. Oakwood Blvd., Chicago, Ill., 60653. CCICS houses the Department of Educational Inquiry and Curriculum Studies Urban Community Studies program, an academic program within the Daniel L. Goodwin College of Education. Through its interdisciplinary curricula, EICS ICS examines the major social, political, economic, and cultural forces that impact urban communities in America, and around the world. The program is committed to training and retraining persons who desire to live and/or work in urban communities.

Program Benefits

The Bachelor of Arts in Urban Community Studies prepares students to examine issues affecting urban areas. Through the program students will:

  • Examine introductory theories and methodologies of analyzing inner city communities throughout the world.
  • Examine introductory literature of the scholarship and activism associated with addressing the current trends and developments related to the multiplicity of issues and challenge urban communities.
  • Demonstrate their understanding of urban issues through written and oral communication, and web-based technologies.
  • Prepare to pursue graduate degrees in Urban Community Studies and other related fields

Career Options

Students in this program generally seek employment in administrative, executive, and educational positions in inner city, human, and social service agencies or with community-based organizations.
