New 872 Area Code Overlay in Chicagoland
On Saturday November 7th, 2009, a new telephone area code was added to the Chicago calling vicinity. The area code 872 has been added to the Chicago geographic calling region currently used by area codes 312 and 773. The area codes for existing customers will not change.
Anyone calling to or from this region should be aware of the new dialing requirements caused by this change.
All callers in the 312, 773, and 872 regions must dial the complete 11 digit telephone number. This includes the number 1, the appropriate 3 digit Area Code, and the seven-digit telephone number. The full 11 digit telephone number must be dialed for ALL local, local toll, and long distance calls to be completed. Callers dialing only seven digits will be connected to a recording that will instruct them to hang up and dial again using the full 11-digit procedure.
NEIU employees can continue to use the same four-digit dialing procedure to place calls within the campus phone system. The procedure for calls made using an authorization code also remains the same.
For calls made to numbers outside the NEIU phone system, callers must continue to dial 9 first to access an outside line, and then use the new 11 digit calling procedure to complete the call.
This change requires that any equipment that stores and dials telephone numbers such as fax machines, call-forward numbers, modems, alarm system, and speed dials be re-programmed to allow for 11-digit dialing.
Please Note:
- Current pricing for coverage in the 312, 773, and 872 area codes will not change. Costs for all calls will remain the same.
- The overlay does not change any three digit dialing—i.e. 911, 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, and 711.
- For pagers, cell phones, Blackberries and other wireless devices, dialing the "1" is not required, therefore dialing the 10 digit Area Code and phone number is sufficient.
