The presentation of One Sky: Tone Poems For Humanity by The Ryan Cohan Sextet has been made possible with support from Chamber Music America's New Works: Encore Program, funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
One Sky, recorded immediately after sold-out shows at Chicago’s historic venue, The Green Mill, features Ryan Cohan in the esteemed company of Bob Sheppard on saxophones and flute, James Cammack on double bass, Tito Carrillo on trumpet, and Cohan’s working quartet featuring the exciting young drummer Kobie Watkins, and bassist Lorin Cohen.
In his explanation of One Sky: Tone Poems for Humanity, Cohan quotes the author Abraham Heschel, who wrote "The truth of human being is love of being alive." That quote galvanized Cohan to look at humanity from a musical viewpoint; put simply, Cohan believes we are all "under one sky," and moving forward means finding the commonalities that can link us, not the differences that might divide us. The result of that insight is a four-movement epic that combines elements of classical music and jazz genres with Cohan’s gift for creating musical "novels" with chapters within chapters.
Currently based in Chicago, Ryan maintains a busy schedule as an in demand sideman and composer and has worked with master jazz artists such as: Freddie Hubbard, Regina Carter, Joe La Barbera, Pat La Barbera, Curtis Fuller, Jon Faddis, Kurt Elling, Nick Brignola, Michal Urbaniak, and Kent Jordan among others. As an educator, Ryan has been on the faculty of the New York Summer School Of The Arts program (1995, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2004) and an accompanist and instructor at the Bloom School Of Jazz (1997-2000). In 2000, The Illinois Arts Council awarded Ryan an artist's fellowship grant for his work as a composer.
