Anthony McGill -- raised in the Chatham (Chicago)neighborhood and, at age 29, principal clarinet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra -- appeared as part of the 2009 inaugural quartet that includes cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Itzhak Perlman and pianist Gabriela Montero. He was associate principal clarinet of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, following studies at the Curtis Institute with Donald Montanaro and at the Interlochen Arts Academy with Richard Hawkins. Mr. McGill has participated at the Marlboro Music Festival, Sarasota Festival, Tanglewood, La Musica International Chamber Music Festival, and Music@Menlo. Since his solo debut in 1991, he has appeared with the Baltimore and New Jersey Symphonies, and with the Tokyo, Guarneri, and Avalon Quartets, and Opus One. He has been heard on Ravinia's Rising Star Series, toured with Musicians from Marlboro, performed at Carnegie Hall, and appeared at Lincoln Center as a member of its Chamber Music Society Two.
The Chicago Clarinet Ensemble presented its first concert in December 2007 at Northeastern Illinois University to a standing-room only crowd. It has since performed at the Chicago Humanities Festival, Looptopia, and the prestigious Vandoren Ensemble Festival. The Chicago Clarinet Ensemble is in-residence at Northeastern where it rehearses and performs regularly. Founded in 2007 by Rose Sperrazza, CCE collaborates with many of the finest clarinetists in the Chicago area.
