About Us
Northeastern Illinois University's Jewel Box Series and Performing Arts Series offer quality arts programming that features local and international performers and lecturers. In September the Presidential Lecture Series presents Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, and the Jewel Box Series opens with cellist Soo Bae, winner of the 2005 Concert Artists Guild International Competition. The fall programming continues with a lecture by Michael Cunningham, author of The Hours, and Jeff Lindberg's Chicago Jazz Orchestra with a tribute to Ray Charles. Artists on the series also give free, public master classes for the enrichment of the NEIU and area communities.
The Northeastern Illinois University Auditorium and Recital Hall are two of the finest performance spaces in Chicago. Originally designed by VOA Associates Inc., in conjunction with Schuler & Schook, Inc. Theater Consultants and The Talaske Group, Inc. Acoustical Consultants, the Recital Hall was completed in 1999, and the Auditorium in 2004.
The 450 seat Auditorium has spacious seating with excellent sight lines. The room is large yet intimate with superior acoustics and a versatile stage suitable for music, theater, and dance.
The Recital Hall provides 175 seats in an acoustically ideal setting. Now in its eighth year, the Jewel Box Series features accomplished performers and broadcasts the concerts live on WFMT 98.7 FM. The Recital Hall has been described as "a gem of a space boasting exceptional acoustics." -Chicago Tribune
