A guide for graduates and their guests
Commencement is a very special event at Northeastern Illinois University. Many of you who are graduating have worked hard and made sacrifices to achieve this educational milestone. In order to ensure that the commencement ceremony is a special time for you, your fellow graduates and guests, please be respectful of everyone who is participating in this event. The following protocol will help ensure that your graduation is the most rewarding and memorable experience possible.
There is one commencement ceremony for all graduates. There is no rehearsal for graduates.
Graduates must arrive at least one hour prior to the beginning of the commencement ceremony. The commencement ceremony will be held at UIC Pavilion, 525 S. Racine Street, Chicago, IL. Upon arrival you will be given directions by commencement officials.
During the ceremony, you will be asked to come to the platform to be recognized individually. After your name is announced and you have received your diploma cover, please return directly to your seat until the ceremony is over. For safety and security reasons you must stay in line and not leave the procession until the ceremony is over.
Also, for safety and security reasons as well as a sign of respect for your fellow graduates, if you wish to attend, plan on remaining for the entire ceremony.
Commencement is a hallowed tradition that is dignified and requires proper behavior. Possession and/or use of alcoholic beverages and/or anything that may disrupt the ceremony is strictly prohibited. Cell phones, PDAs and pagers must be turned off or placed on “silent” mode.
All graduating students are required to wear appropriate academic regalia. This includes a cap, gown and tassel. For graduate students, a hood specific to your degree is also required. Regalia is available for advance purchase at Beck’s Book Store. Regalia may not be purchased the day of commencement.
Each graduate is provided up to a maximum of six (6) guest tickets for graduation (graduates will not need tickets to enter). Tickets may be picked up at the Information Center starting Thursday, April 11, 2013.
Information for Guests
Please help us provide a memorable event for your graduate and all of our graduates and their guests. We ask that you please be seated before the procession of graduates begins. Late arrivals will not be seated during the processional, and must wait to be seated until its conclusion. Each guest must present a ticket for entry.
Dress attire is appropriate for the occasion. For safety and security reasons, guests must remain in their seats for the entire ceremony and are asked to remain as a sign of respect for all graduates on their special day.
Photographs are encouraged, but guests must remain in their seats while taking photos or videotaping any part of the ceremony.
Thank you for your participation in commencement and for following this protocol. With everyone’s cooperation, it will surely be a special and memorable day.
