NEIU Scholarship Information
LEARN ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS AT NEIU

Students are often faced with the dilemma of how they will pay for their education. For many the financing of a university education becomes a barrier to learning. With this in mind, the Scholarships Office seeks to lead in the promotion and awarding of university scholarship funds to deserving students. Therefore, the goal is to assist in lessening the financial burden that many students seek to overcome. Below is a list of available scholarships, as well as brief descriptions and contact information for each. If you are an incoming freshman, you may also view a comprehensive list of scholarship opportunities.
NEIU Presidential Scholarship The Presidential Scholarship is the most prestigious scholarship awarded at Northeastern Illinois University. It is awarded only to new freshmen entering NEIU in the fall semester. The scholarship provides full tuition, fees, and a book allowance for four academic years. Presidential Scholars receive automatic admission into the University Honors Program. Prospective applicants must plan to graduate from an Illinois high school, have a minimum ACT composite score of 27, and a cumulative grade point average of 3.35. The Priority Review deadline to submit an application is December 1st with the final deadline being February 15th. Provost and Deans Merit Scholarships for Freshman The purpose of the Provost and Deans Merit Freshman Scholarships are to recognize the academic achievements of new entering students. Both scholarships are open to new incoming freshman students who apply early for admission to NEIU and who meet the ACT and GPA requirement. The Provost Merit Scholarship award amount is $2,000 and the Deans Merit Scholarship is for $1,000. Provost and Deans Merit Scholarships for Transfers The aim of the Provost and Deans Merit Transfer Scholarships is to provide funding for students who have been academically successful at their transfer institutions. Both scholarships are open to new entering transfer students who have applied early for admission to NEIU and who meet the GPA requirement and who have earned an Associate of Art or Associate of Science Degree (or have at least 60 credit hours). Recipients of the Provost Merit Scholarship receive $2,000, while the Deans Merit Scholarship is awarded for $1,000. NEIU Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship A minimum of 3.0 GPA and an A.A. or A.S. degree are required. Out-of-state students, part-time students, students with pervious bachelor's degrees, and are not eligible. The scholarship covers the first 60 credit hours at NEIU. The student must enroll immediately following completion of two-year college. Verification and recommendation from a Phi Theta Kappa advisor are required. The application deadline is May 1. New entering and continuing students wishing to be considered for other types of awards, such as NEIU Foundation Scholarships should complete the General Scholarship Application. The priority deadline each year is March 15. Instructions regarding how to apply are contained in the application.
NEIU College of Arts & Sciences Tuition Scholarship Freshman requirements: upper 15% of graduating class, minimum ACT of 24 or SAT of 1110. Transfer or current NEIU student requirements: minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25. NEIU Scholarships in Mathematics and Physical Sciences NEIU is offering National Science Foundation Scholarships to incoming students that major in one of the following disciplines: Earth Science, Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics. Merit-based scholarships of up to $10,000/year are available. In addition to the financial support, the scholarship program provides students with faculty mentors and research opportunities. NEIU College of Business & Management Tuition Scholarship Freshman-upper 15% of graduating class, minimum ACT of 26 or an SAT score of 1110, one page essay, submit two letters of recommendation from teachers and/or employers. Transfer or current NEIU Student with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00, one page essay, submit two letters of recommendation from teachers and/or employers. NEIU College of Education Freshmen-upper 15% of graduating class or minimum ACT of 24 or an SAT score of 1110, one page essay. NEIU University Honors Program Tuition Merit Scholarship (Undergraduate) Limited availability. Must be admitted to NEIU's Honors Program and in good academic standing, have a 3.5 GPA, and enroll in at least one Honors course each semester the award is granted. Two-page essay and transcript. NEIU Talent Tuition Scholarship (Art, Music, Dance, Honors, Leadership, Speech and Performing Arts, Publications) Undergraduate. Limited availability. Approval of NEIU Talent Committee. Maximum four years of tuition payment. Reapply annually. No repayment obligation and covers tuition only. NEIU Graduate Merit Tuition Scholarship Graduate. Must be enrolled in graduate program and apply through academic department. Pays only tuition. No repayment obligation.
NEIU Graduate Need Based Tuition Scholarship Graduate. Must show need. Must be enrolled for nine credit hours. Pays tuition only. No repayment obligation. Must complete FAFSA and the Need-Based Tuition Waiver application. For further information financial-aid@neiu.edu.
NEIU Cooperating Teacher Certification Graduate only. Current teachers who have supervised a NEIU student teacher in a classroom setting arranged through Office of Clinical Experiences and Student Teaching. For each student teacher supervised the cooperating teacher will be waived tuition for one 3 credit hour class. No repayment obligation. NEIU Scholarship for Children of Deceased Faculty and Staff Undergraduate. Covers tuition and fees. No repayment obligation. For further information, contact Mary A. Griesinger at m-griesinger@neiu.edu or 773-442-5202.
Diversifying Faculty in Illinois (DFI) Graduate only. Black, Hispanic, Native American, or Asian American who have been accepted to a graduate program at Northeastern Illinois University. Must be an Illinois resident and U.S. citizen. Provides partial and full educational stipend for students pursuing degree objectives leading to teaching or administrative positions in post secondary education. Illinois Special Education Teacher Tuition Scholarship Undergraduate and Graduate. Limited availability to students expressing intent to take courses in preparation for teaching special education. No need analysis required. Maximum: four years. Pays tuition and activity fees. Repayment to state is necessary if teaching career is not pursued. Illinois Merit Recognition Scholarship Undergraduate. Students must be in the top 5% of their high school class for the 7th and 8th semesters. Eligible students will be sent an application in the summer after high school graduation. $1000 award for the freshman year. No repayment obligation. Illinois General Assembly Tuition Waiver Undergraduate and Graduate. Financial need usually not a factor. Each member of the Illinois General Assembly is authorized to award General Assembly Scholarships. No repayment obligation. Contact your Illinois State Senator or State Representative.
Illinois Veterans Grant Undergraduate and graduate. Veterans must complete appropriate application form and furnish one copy of their official separation form DD-214 which demonstrates: 1) Illinois residency until at least 6 months prior to induction. 2) Served on active duty in the Armed Forces for at least one year at any time since 1940; and 3) Returned to Illinois within 6 months after discharge. Payment of tuition and some fees at any state university. Students may enroll full or part-time. Illinois National Guard/Naval Militia Undergraduate and graduate. Enlisted member who has served at least one year in the Illinois National Guard or Naval Militia. Payment of some tuition and some fees at any state school. Students may enroll full or part-time. Illinois Dependents of POW's and MIA's Scholarship Undergraduate and graduate. Students who are dependents (spouse and/or children) of Illinois residents, officially declared prisoners of war, missing-in-action, killed, or 100 percent disabled since January 1, 1960. Illinois ROTC Tuition Waiver Undergraduate and graduate. Based on merit. Covers tuition and some fees up to four years. No repayment obligation. Contact U.S. Army ROTC; University of Illinois at Chicago 312-996-3451 or U.S. Air Force: Illinois Institute of Technology 312-567-3525.
Bureau of Indian Affairs Undergraduate and graduate. Must be native American and show financial need. $500 to $1,500 or more, depending upon funds available to the Bureau. No repayment obligation. Contact your tribal office.
Private Scholarships Undergraduate and graduate. Need, merit, ethnic group, religious group, etc. The amounts vary according to the award. No repayment obligation. Sources of private scholarships are various outside sources. Students are encouraged to register with FREE Scholarship searches such as FastWeb.com.
