Next Steps for Admitted Transfers
1) Apply for Financial Aid and Scholarships We strongly encourage students interested in attending NEIU to apply for Financial Aid as soon as possible. More specifically, we encourage a FAFSA application priority deadline of February 28th. The sooner you can apply for aid, the better we can serve you in determining your eligibility and your financial package. If you are interested in applying for scholarships, please note that there is a separate application for NEIU Scholarships. The priority deadline for scholarships is March 15th. Learn more about financial aid and scholarships by visiting www.neiu.edu/FinAid.htm.
2) Activate your NEIUport account You will first receive your admission letter. A few days later you should receive a separate registration packet with your NetID and NEIU student ID number. You will need both in order to activate your NEIUport account. What is NEIUport? NEIUport is an online portal to help you: • Access your NEIU e-mail account • View your degree evaluation (preferably before meeting with your advisor) • Check your Financial Aid status and pay tuition • Register for classes • Look up required textbooks • Sign up for N-Alert (see below) Access NEIUport from the NEIU home page (www.neiu.edu) and look for the NEIUport logo:

3) Sign up for N-Alert You can receive NEIU security alerts and weather-related closures through the N-Alert system. N-Alerts are sent via text message, voicemail, and e-mail. Sign up for N-Alert by logging into your NEIUport account and clicking on the "Student" tab. You will see "Personal Information" and "N Alert" in the top left hand corner of the screen. You can then choose the email address and/or phone number for receiving N-Alert messages.
4) Meet with an Academic Advisor Academic advisors can help you review which classes transferred from your previous college(s) and help you understand the courses that you must complete in order to graduate with a degree from Northeastern. Students who have not yet decided on a major or who have not yet completed 60 credits should meet with an advisor from the Academic Advising Center. You may schedule an appointment by calling (773) 442-5470. Please visit the Academic Advising Center website to learn more about transfer advising and contact information for various academic programs: www.neiu.edu/transferadvising.
5) Register for classes Sign into your NEIUport account in order to register for classes. You will need to click on the “current student” tab and go to the Registration Tools area to register for your courses.
6) Cashier Confirmation/ Payment Deadlines To guarantee the registration of classes, all students must confirm their registration by the initial payment due date whether or not a bill is received. In the Schedule of Classes there is a section called University Calendar. This is a list of important dates, including payment or confirmation deadlines. Failure to pay or confirm will result in students being dropped from all classes for which they have registered.
Financial Aid Recipients Students with authorized financial aid sufficient to pay their initial payment will be confirmed automatically. Students whose financial aid is still in process may be eligible for a waiver from the Office of Financial Aid, which must be presented to the Cashier’s Office.
Veterans, Military, and Dependents If you are using veterans benefits, you must submit a Certification of Enrollment form prior to the first day of classes in order to maintain your enrollment (earlier submission is HIGHLY recommended). This form is available online at the Veterans Services website: www.neiu.edu/veterans or in person at the Veterans Services Office (Room D 130). Call (773) 442-4005 for more information.
7) Attend Transfer Orientation Transfer Orientation programs help you become acquainted with NEIU and make your life easier as a transfer student. Attending an orientation session will greatly assist you in learning more about the various services available at NEIU such as financial aid, health services, student insurance, parking, registration questions and much more. These sessions are designed to provide you with important information to ease your transition and to help you meet people across campus who can serve as a resource for you. Newly admitted transfers can register for classes prior to attending an orientation session (please see Step 1 for Transfers above). You can register for Transfer Orientation by visiting the Dean of Students website or email: Dean-Students@neiu.edu.
8) Veterans, Servicemembers, and Dependents Contact the NEIU Veterans Services office to make arrangements to meet with them prior to the beginning of your first semester. Paperwork verifying your eligibility to receive educational benefits will be needed. For more information about veteran and military benefits, please contact Matthew Sawicki by phone at (773) 442-4005 or by e-mail at m-sawicki@neiu.edu. Visit their website at www.neiu.edu/veterans.
9) Send Final Transcripts If you are currently enrolled at another institution, your final transcript must be forwarded to the Admissions Office as soon as your coursework is completed. A hold(s) is placed on student records, blocking registration for upcoming semesters, until a final transcript is received. Documents may be sent to: Northeastern Illinois University Admissions Office 5500 North St. Louis Ave. Chicago, IL 60625-4699
