Academic Advisor
Northeastern Illinois University invites applications for a professional Program Specialist/Academic Advisor position in the Academic Advisement Center. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to plan, implement and deliver academic advising services and activities directed toward facilitating the personal growth, achievement, and retention of students.

About the Academic Advisement Center The Academic Advisement Center supports and promotes the University's mission of fostering student growth and development by providing developmental academic advising to all generally admitted, degree-seeking undergraduates who have not yet declared a major. Students are assigned to a professional staff advisor who is available to assist them until they matriculate into a major program.
Program Specialist/Academic Advisor The Program Specialist position reports to the Director of the Academic Advisement Center who reports to the Dean of Academic Development. The Program Specialist assists students in learning about educational options, degree requirements, and university policies and procedures; provides students with guidance in clarifying educational objectives and developing an academic plan appropriate to their educational/career goals; advocates on behalf of students and introduces them to the many support services and resources available within the university community.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 1. Providing developmental academic advisement and educational planning to regularly admitted, incoming and continuing students who have not declared a major. 2. Assisting both assigned and unassigned students on either a walk-in basis or through scheduled appointments. Also, responding to students via electronic and phone contacts. 3. Advising students on course selection and sequencing; registration; academic planning; general education; career planning; major selection, graduation requirements and interpretation of university policies and procedures. 4. Maintaining accurate records of all student contacts in electronic format. 5. Maintaining a caseload of assigned students: initiates contact, monitors their progress; recommend solutions to academic difficulties; provides probation counseling and assists with petitions for financial aid and academic reinstatement. 6. Participating in Orientation/Advisement workshops and FYE programs; conducts small group advising during advisement workshops and teaches academic planning exercise in FYE classes. 7. Fostering intentional relationships with other departmental and college advisors to: 1) ensure the consistency and accuracy of information transmitted to students; 2.) facilitate transition of students into the major. 8. Advocating on behalf of students when appropriate. Providing and accepting referral services within the university community and conducting appropriate follow-up. 9. Participating in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Academic Advisement program services, goals and objectives.
Required Qualifications A Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Higher Education or a related field and at least 1 year of academic advising /counseling experience at the college/university level. Candidates must demonstrate exceptional written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively with a highly diverse constituency. A strong working knowledge of basic computer applications is required.
