University Honors Program
Program Overview The University Honors Program is a four-year university wide program providing a challenging educational experience to qualified students. The program serves as a laboratory for academic innovation that will improve undergraduate education, and provide a place for students to discover the best in themselves. Through small classes emphasizing writing and critical thinking skills and close, continual academic advisement, the Honors Program seeks to provide access to excellent education for its students.
The Honors Program encourages students to enhance their undergraduate experience with local, national and international academic experiences. Honors students have been active participants in NEIU Annual Student Research and Creative Activities Symposium and have presented papers at other academic conferences. Honors students also are active campus leaders.
The University Honors Program is an integral part of the Northeastern community. It helps students to reach their full potential as undergraduates and prepares them for the challenges of graduate education or employment.
How does the program work? Freshman and sophomore students complete regular general education requirements by taking Honors courses in the fine arts, humanities, social, behavioral and natural sciences.
Junior and senior students complete requirements for their major with enhanced courses, as well as an Honors Seminar, Honors Colloquium, and a culminating thesis project, a research-based inquiry guided by a faculty advisor of the student’s choosing.
In honors courses, subjects are examined in depth. The quality of teaching and work is high. The pace of honors courses is rigorous, stimulating, challenging, and intense. Students typically take one or two honors courses per semester as part of their regular course load.
Seniors in the program complete an Honors Thesis/Project. This extended project allows students to put academic skills and creativity to work on subjects that most interest them.
