Graduation Requirements
Upon the completing of the required coursework for the student’s specific M.S. in Exercise Science concentration, he/she will be required to meet the following requirements prior to earning the degree:
THESIS OPTION STUDENTS Written Thesis Presentation: Each Thesis Option student will be required to submit a written presentation of his/her thesis research for approval by his/her Thesis Committee. The Committee Chair will provide more information on this requirement. The determination of satisfactory completion of the written presentation of the student’s thesis will be determined by a majority vote (3/4) of the student’s Committee.
Oral Thesis Presentation/Defense: Upon approval of the Thesis Option student’s written thesis report by the his/her Committee, the student is required to, in a satisfactory manner, orally present and defend his/her thesis research to his/her Committee and any/all interested members of the NEIU faculty. The Committee Chair will provide more information on this requirement. The determination of satisfactory completion of the oral presentation of the student’s thesis will be determined by a majority vote (3/4) of the student’s Committee. A student who fail to satisfactorily complete this requirement will be given a second chance to adequately present/defend his/her research. In the event that a student fails in his/her second attempt to meet this requirement, the student will be deemed to have failed to meet the culminating requirement for the degree and will not be awarded the degree.
NON-THESIS OPTION STUDENTS Written Comprehensive Examinations: The Non-Thesis Option student is required to satisfactorily complete written comprehensive examinations over critical areas of his/her coursework leading to the degree.
Specifically: 1. The graduate faculty will prepare a series of written and/or practical test items for each of the four general areas the student selects. The goal of these four general area examinations will be to assess the student’s knowledge of those specific topics deemed to be critical for competency in the general areas being tested. 2. There will be one examination day. 3. Each area examination will be evaluated by the faculty who created the test items included on the test. Satisfactory performance on a general area examination will be determined as “B” performance or better. 4. Satisfactory completion of the culminating requirement (i.e., the comprehensive examination process) will be determined as satisfactory completion of each of the four general area examinations. 5. In the event that a student does not satisfactorily complete one or more of the general area examinations, he/she will be afforded a second opportunity to display satisfactory knowledge in the general area(s) where his/her performance was deemed unsatisfactory (i.e., the student will be allowed a general area examination re-take(s)). At this time, the student may opt for an oral examination format over the written format if applicable to the examination. 6. In the situation where a student fails to satisfactorily complete one or more general area examination re-take, the student will be deemed to have failed to meet the culminating requirement for the degree and will not be awarded the degree.
