Fitness and Wellness Concentration
Admission Requirements 1. Students must fulfill the requirements for admission to the Graduate College at Northeastern Illinois University. Application packets can be obtained from the Graduate College. When filling out the application packet, each student should be sure to: a. specify on the application the degree concentration for which he/she is applying (i.e., M.S. in Exercise Science-FW, or M.S. in Exercise Science-HP). b. note in his/her goals/objectives essay whether or not he/she would be willing to enter into the other degree concentration if there are no openings in his/her preferred degree concentration. For example, if a student is applying for the Fitness & Wellness Concentration and it fills prior to his/her admittance, would he/she wish to be considered for admittance into the Human Performance Concentration? c. note in his/her goals/objectives essay if he/she is interested in receiving a graduate assistantship. If so, the student should detail his/her specific assistantship interests and qualifications (see Graduate Assistantships/ Graduate Merit Tuition Awards (GMTAs)).
2. Satisfactory completion* of the following, or equivalent, undergraduate coursework (NEIU equivalent courses are noted parenthetically): a. general biology (BIOL-102) b. general chemistry (CHEM-211) c. general psychology (PSYC-200) d. human anatomy (HPER-PEMT-305) e. exercise physiology (HPER-ESCR-204) f. fitness concepts (HPER-PEMT-205 or 342K) g. health/wellness concepts (HPER-HLED-107)
*“Satisfactory completion” is defined as a “B” average in the prerequisite coursework, with no single course grade below a “C”. At most comprehensive institutions, the aforementioned prerequisite coursework will total approximately 21 credit hours.
3. Two letters of recommendations.
4. An educational background and/or employment experience in fitness, wellness, human performance, or the exercise sciences is preferred.
Thesis/Non-Thesis Option All students will be required to decide whether or not they wish to conduct thesis research as a partial requirement for the M.S. in Exercise Science. This decision is usually made relatively early in the student’s graduate work (i.e., within the first two semesters). Students who choose to write a thesis will be denoted as Thesis Option students and will be required to select a Thesis Committee. This Thesis Committee, and in particular the Thesis Committee Chair, will provide guidance to the student in the areas of original research question development, research design, research proposal preparation, data collection, data reduction, data analysis, data interpretation, and data presentation in both written and verbal form. The Exercise Science Program Advisor will provide more information on this process. Additionally, Thesis Option students are required to take HPER-EXSC-432: Thesis Research (6 credit hours) in their elective coursework. Finally, the culminating requirements for Thesis Option students will differ from the culminating requirements for Non-Thesis Option students (see Culminating Requirement). NOTE: Thesis Option students may change to the Non-Thesis Option at any time during their graduate work. However, HPER-EXSC-432 will not count towards the 36 credit hours required to earn the degree in the Non-Thesis Option.
