Welcome to the College of Education (COE) at Northeastern Illinois University. Associate Deans Terry Stirling, Elliott Lessen and I hope that you spend time browsing our COE pages in order to get an understanding of the many programs we offer. Whether you are a first-time college student who hopes to become a teacher or a seasoned professional who is thinking about expanding your professional knowledge or changing careers to enter an education-related or community-based field, we have a program for you. I hope that you will also take time to look at the credentials of our talented faculty. Our COE faculty are exemplars of excellent teaching, scholarly research, and commitment to P-12 schools throughout Chicago and in the surrounding communities. Your programs and your field and clinical experiences are designed and supervised by faculty with experience on the campus and in P-12 classrooms!
| The College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Colleges of Teacher Education (NCATE), the premier accrediting body approved by the U.S. Department of Education. This means that our programs and our faculty undergo a rigorous peer review process every seven years. Our last NCATE review took place in 2003 and our programs and faculty won accolades. Our theme, Reflective Professionals Building Learning Communities, underpins our emphasis on fourteen performance standards that are aligned with the Illinois Standards for School Professionals (IPTS). Our programs in School and Community Counseling are not only recognized by NCATE but they undergo a separate peer review process and are accredited by CACREP, the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. So, you can see that the COE at NEIU represents the highest standards of professional excellence, commitment to diversity, and collaboration with each other and with our local community.
We invite you to browse the web sites of two additional locations that are part of the College of Education: the Chicago Teachers’Center (CTC) and the Jacob Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (JCCICS). The CTC site will provide you with information on the extensive grant work being conducted in the College of Education as well as the wonderful resources that are available to CPS teachers and COE teacher candidates. We offer undergraduate and graduate programs in Inner City Studies as well as courses in Educational Leadership at JCCICS.
We hope that you will visit our campus in person soon but in the meantime, we are confident that you will be impressed with the wonderful work and extensive resources available in the College of Education at Northeastern Illinois University.
