Waiving Prerequisites
Early Childhood Education
The Early Childhood Program agreed at their November 1998 meeting that "there will be a cap of twenty [20] hours PER clinical allowed to be waived" PER course. Therefore, no more than a total of sixty [60] hours will be waived for the three required courses [328i, t, or m].
Requirements necessary for the consideration of any hour waiving at Northeastern Illinois University, College of Education are as follows: • A letter from the institution/s indicating school involvement, length of time, final grade, and the area signed by the Coordinator of the Field Experience Program. • A letter from a school (if teaching) on letterhead, with the length of time, the area/s taught, and the quality of the work. A minimum of TWO YEARS EXPERIENCE is required for any consideration of hour waiving. {DO NOT SUBMIT IF UNDER THIS TIME LIMIT.} • Day to day substituting does not count. • A letter from the student requesting hours to be waived for a specific course. • This MUST be completed at least one semester prior to the Early Childhood course that involves clinical hours. No hours will be considered during the actual semester. Waiving is reviewed ONLY during October, March, and July. • No hours will be waived for the 328m course until 328t has been successfully completed. • ECED 328i will be considered separately for hour waiving. • The Coordinator may speak with the student to further assess the experiences, and then forward the materials to the chair of the department for his/her decision. • The student will be notified in writing of the decision. The decision will be placed on file in the CEST Office for future reference and state verification. • Remember hour waiving is not a given because you have worked in a school. The coordinator, in consultation with the department, is the final decision maker. • You may not reapply once the decision has been rendered for a next semester. Consideration of hour waiving will be made one time only. Each student is reviewed as an individual using the experience based on the above criteria.
If you have any questions in regard to this procedure contact the CEST Office.
