Teacher Entitlement & Certification
State certification requires passing of the Illinois Certification Basic Skills and Subject Matter Tests. Information about the examinations may be obtained from program advisors or departmental personnel. State of Illinois H.B. 150 requires that all applicants for certification have coursework in the psychology of exceptional children, and identification and methods of teaching the exceptional child. The statute further requires that the child with learning disabilities be given particular focus in the coursework. Northeastern Illinois University will, upon graduation, include a statement on each education major's transcript indicating that H.B. 150 has been met through infusion into all coursework, and is equivalent to three semester hours.
Students must receive a grade of "B" or higher in student teaching to be eligible for certification. Students successfully completing student teaching and any other outstanding requirements, must follow the required entitlement procedures. The instruction sheet for this procedure may be obtained from the Admissions and Records Office during the term in which one student teaches. Further information is provided at the Placement Office Credential File Meeting held once in the Fall and Spring semesters.
