Teacher & Novice Conference Procedure Suggestions
Clinical Experiences: The conference process is a major vehicle for communication, ongoing planning, lesson review and examination, and evaluation. During clinical experiences the students must begin to reflect upon their lessons, and talk with their cooperating teachers about set-up procedures, pacing, curriculum development, and student responses as preparation for student teaching. These conferences should be held regularly, thereby allotting time to meet during the teacher's preparation periods, and/or before or after school. (Class time is not the time to expect attention)
Bi-monthly seminars with the university instructor will provide answers to additional questions. The university instructor will visit the school a minimum of three times: first to view the school, meet the teacher/s, and set the tone for the experience; second to view the student teaching a small group lesson; and finally view a whole group lesson. Conferences may be held with the cooperating teacher before or after this time period. This will vary by school and supervisor.
Student Teaching: During student teaching, the process becomes intensified.
Conferences should be held: • on a daily basis between the student and cooperating teacher/s; • weekly with the university instructor and the student; and • periodically throughout the semester with all involved parties.
It is during these time periods that all participants have an opportunity to share ideas, collaborate, exchange information, and provide for the ultimate growth of the prospective teacher.
