Rationale
The Illinois State Certification Board has mandated that: All Elementary and Secondary Education students who desire Illinois Teacher certification must complete and document a minimum of 100 clock hours of clinical experiences prior to student teaching (Effective, January, 1980).
As a result of this ruling, all teacher education programs are required to include clinical (pre-student teaching) experiences throughout the preservice program. This mandate places the responsibility upon universities and colleges to furnish students with opportunities to become acquainted with the needs of all children and youth in field based sites. The experiences culminate in student teaching.
This handbook has been prepared to provide information about the clinical experiences and student teaching requirements at Northeastern Illinois University relative to the responsibilities of the student, the functions of the cooperating teacher and NEIU supervisor, and the role of the coordinator. It should serve as a guide and provide all participants with assistance for creating successful experiences that unite the world of theory with practice for the future teachers, to whose development we are all committed.
