BiographyNEIU’s Flute Instructor, Lyon Leifer, is the Principal Flutist of the Ars Viva Orchestra and of the Lake Forest Symphony Orchestra. He has been a member of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and has also appeared in the flute section of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He was the Principal Flutist of the Music of the Baroque ensemble for 27 seasons. He has performed chamber music widely, including multiple syndicated broadcasts and concerts in Shanghai, Istanbul, Hanoi, Havana, Caracas and many other locales.
In addition to his pursuit of music in the Western tradition, he has maintained a deep and long-term study of Indian classical music; having lived in India for five years, studying the music and returning periodically for advanced study and performance. Lyon has held both student and senior Fulbright Fellowships, as well as a senior fellowship from the American Institute of Indian Studies, which have all been significant in supporting his dedicated study of north Indian classical music and flute. Lyon has appeared in Chicago and many other U.S. venues performing in the Indian genre, alongside his activities in the Western classics.
Lyon has been on the ArtsTour roster of the Illinois Arts Council and has received support from Chicago Artists Abroad for his touring and performing activities around the world.
