Minor in Music
The Department of Music offers two minors in music: the General Music Minor and the Music Education Minor for Elementary Education Majors.
About the General Music Minor (23 credit hours)
In consultation with the Department of Music advisor, the student designs an individualized and appropriately balanced program to meet personal interests, abilities, and needs. Courses are selected from the departmental curriculum and may not include MUS-101 The Musical Experience.
Students must obtain the advisor's approval for the total program plan and declare the minor prior to coursework. The curriculum plan must include: Music Theory (6 credits), Music History (3 credits) and Music Technology (3 credits). Individual applied instruction and ensemble credits may be combined for a maximum of 5 credits. Applied and ensemble credits must be approved in advance.*
All music minors must attend a total of 15 concerts sponsored by the Department of Music. A total of five concerts occurring in other venues may be applied to the required 15 if approved in advance by the student’s Minor Advisor.

**Music Theory Students take two sequential courses from the list. Students with little or no experience with Music Theory and or reading musical notation should enroll in Music 104. Students with rudimentary knowledge may enroll in Mus-105, Basic Materials. A placement test is given on the first day of Music 121, Music Theory I, to determine student’s skill level. Based upon the test results, students may be required to enroll in MUS 105 Basic Materials in Music Theory before proceeding to Music Theory I.

Comments:
1. Music Concepts is recommended by the College of Education for all Elementary Education students.
2. 9 hours of 300-level work in the minor program must be completed to meet graduation and certification requirements. If a music minor is at the 300-level in either piano or voice, which seldom happens, that could count toward the 9 hours of 300-level requirement.
