Foreign Language & Literature
Visit our Foreign Language Department Website for latest updates and information
The benefits of studying foreign languages have been recognized as critical to America's economic growth in the coming years. Proficiency in a language enables you to communicate directly with people of other nations, increases vocabulary and grammatical knowledge in your native language, and expands the boundaries of your world view. You learn about a foreign nation's history, customs, traditions, business practices, literature, music, and art. At the same time you are developing an understanding, appreciation and tolerance of that nation and its people.
In addition to degree programs in French and Spanish, the department offers minors in French, Korean and Spanish. Additional courses are also given in Arabic, Chinese, German, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese and Russian. Course offerings include basic and advanced language (conversation and grammar), culture, literature, film, business language courses, and linguistics. A Master's Degree in Spanish is offered in cooperation with Roosevelt University. Internship and study abroad programs are available through the department and Northeastern's Office of International Programs. Entering freshmen who have taken two or more years of a foreign language in high school may be awarded up to six hours of college credit through our placement program
FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND YOUR CAREER
Today job candidates in all fields must have in-depth knowledge of the international marketplace and strong language skills. Because of their enhanced communication and cultural competencies, those who have studied foreign languages will have a distinct advantage over their monolingual competitors. Foreign language fluency has become especially critical for those seeking positions in fields such as international management and marketing, travel and tourism, law, mass media, education, public policy, health and human services, engineering, and the sciences. The department maintains a Career Center in the Foreign Language Laboratory and sponsors Career Forums which help students identify job opportunities for foreign language majors.
Courses are designed to respond to the needs of a wide variety of students:
- Working professionals whose advancement might depend on improved language ability.
- Elementary or high school teachers wishing to obtain additional training for fine-tuning of language skills.
- Majors in International Relations, International Marketing/Management, Political Science or in other disciplines who seek to enhance their cultural and linguistic competence for post-graduate studies or employment.
