College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Positions
Northeastern Illinois University is a comprehensive state university of 12,000 commuter students located on a 67-acre campus in a residential neighborhood on the northwest side of Chicago. Art-Graphic Design. The position will involve teaching introductory through advanced undergraduate graphic design classes, course and program development, department advising, commitment to professional involvement and service. Communication, Media and Theatre. Communication. We seek candidates with background in communication and communication theory, and interest and/or expertise in health communication, organizational or corporate communication, conflict negotiation, group discussion or leadership, and research methods at the advanced undergraduate and Master’s degree levels, as well as in basic communication courses at the freshman and sophomore levels. Interest and ability to direct graduate research using quantitative or mixed methodologies desirable. Candidates whose research is interdisciplinary are encouraged to apply. Earth Science. Specialty is open, but expertise related to petrology, structural geology, or geotectonics in support of the department’s emphasis on urban and environmental geology in the Midwest is desirable. Candidates with expertise in related fields are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have a solid background in geology and will teach courses in support of the department’s degree requirements, as well as courses for the general education program and First-Year Experience program, as appropriate. Opportunities exist to participate in interdisciplinary research, student advisement, and curriculum development in conjunction with the University’s new Student Center for Science Engagement. The department encourages the use of innovative and effective pedagogies, and candidates must have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching in classroom, laboratory, and field settings. Candidates also are expected to develop a research program that will actively engage undergraduate students. The successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to the development of complementary programs such as an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science. A Ph.D. in geology or related field at the time of appointment is required; post-doctoral research or related work experience is desirable. English. Seeking candidates in U.S. Latina/o and Latin American Literatures and Cultures with the ability to teach the full range of American Literature survey courses as well. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the English Department, one yearly graduate seminar in the M.A. program in Latin American Literatures and Cultures, housed in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, and occasional courses in the interdisciplinary Latina/o and Latin American Studies Program. History-Islamic World. Candidates should have a deep and broad understanding of the Islamic World, with area of specialization and period of concentration open, and interdisciplinary approaches welcome. The successful candidate is expected to teach general surveys as well as upper-division and graduate courses in area of specialization. Mathematics (2 positions). We seek candidates who will take an active role in teaching and curriculum development in support of our undergraduate and graduate programs, and maintain a high level of scholarly achievement. Teaching responsibilities may include lower level service courses as well as courses in our undergraduate and graduate programs. The University attaches primary importance to excellence in teaching, but emphasis is also given to pure and applied research and to academic and public service. Applicants must show evidence of the potential for effective teaching, excellent communication skills, scholarly achievement and a commitment to curriculum development. For one of the positions, preference will be given to applicants specializing in the applied mathematical sciences. For the other position, preference will be given to a Ph.D. mathematician with experience working in the field of mathematics education. Psychology. Seeking candidates in Clinical, Abnormal, or Personality Psychology. The Department highly values collaborative research with both colleagues and students. Further, we are especially interested in candidates whose work focuses on cross-cultural and/or adult clinical populations. In addition to area of specialization, excellence in both teaching and research is one of our primary criteria. The successful candidate is expected to maintain a research program in their area of specialty that involves undergraduates and possibly Master’s students from our Gerontology program and will teach courses both at our main campus as well as at our University Center of Lake County site. Social Work (2 positions). Primary responsibilities include teaching a variety of social work courses including policy, practice and HBSE within an international focus. One of the positions is for the Director of Field Education, requiring knowledge of the Chicago Metropolitan area communities and agencies. This position may include teaching at the main campus, the Northeastern Illinois University Jacob H. Carruthers' Center for Inner City Studies and El Centro. The Northeastern Illinois University Social Work Program is a CSWE accredited Bachelor’s Social Work Program. Requirements for consideration include two-year post-MSW practice experience, and an earned doctorate in social work or a related field.
