General Tips for Working with the Media
Consistently communicating positive messages about the University in the media creates awareness of and interest in Northeastern. The public relations office can assist at any stage of the news making process.
What makes news?
| Topicality – Is this an issue of the day? |
| Relevance – Will this impact the public? |
| Human interest – Does the story touch an emotion or experience shared by all people? |
| Entertainment value – Is the story funny, curious or will it stimulate imagination or passion? |
| Controversy – Does the story create debate? | After submitting an article or being interviewed, follow up. Establishing relationships with media contacts will help create future opportunities.
| Update the public relations office. |
| Find out when your letter will be published or your interview will air. |
| Document your success and submit the information to the public relations office for internal publication. |
| Brainstorm other media contacts that may be interested in the same topic. |
| Send a thank you letter to the media contact with a business card. |
