Northeastern Illinois University Activated as a Red Cross
Mass Care Shelter for Gustav Evacuees
CHICAGO -- Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU), as a designated American Red Cross Mass Care Shelter, is one of 500 locations across the country and the only mass care shelter in Chicago providing a safe haven to evacuees of Hurricane Gustav. Evacuees will be received at NEIU’s Northside campus’ Physical Education Complex.
The University will remain open.
The Red Cross has alerted the University that up to 40 evacuees are expected to arrive from hurricane affected states including Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. NEIU is working together with Red Cross disaster relief workers to welcome and comfort evacuees as they arrive.
“We open our doors to the Gustav evacuees with the hope that the University will provide some comfort and support during this relief effort which we understand is the largest operation of its kind launched by the American Red Cross since Hurricane Katrina in 2005,” said NEIU President Sharon K. Hahs. “We stand ready and willing to assist in any way we can.”
This is not the first time NEIU has been called into duty by the Red Cross. The last time NEIU was activated as a mass care shelter was in 2004 after a fire on the Northside of Chicago.
