The Legendary Bill Holman to Conduct the NEIU Varsity Big Band in a FREE CONCERT
WHAT: Jazz legend Bill Holman will conduct the Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) VarsityBig Band, directed by Mayo Tiana. The program, featuring music by Holman, will also includeNEIU faculty artists Travis Heath, trumpet, Christie Miller, bass clarinet, and Mayo Tiana, trombone.
WHEN: Thursday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m.
WHERE: NEIU Auditorium, 5500 N. St. Louis Ave., Chicago (Use the entrance located at 3701 W. Bryn Mawr Ave.)
DETAILS: The Los Angeles Times has called Holman “one of the most original minds in orchestral jazz.” He has been nominated for 13 Grammy awards, and won three. He has been voted “Arranger of the Year” and “Best Arranger” in music industry listener and critic polls. The Bill Holman Collection of scores and memorabilia was established as part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. in May 2000.
Mayo Tiana has made the music of Holman a cornerstone of NEIU’s jazz ensemble program. “We have used the quality of Holman’s music as a standard of excellence to which our students aspire,” said Tiana.
Holman and Tiana have known each other for more than 30 years, and Tiana performed as a member of Holman’s band from 1975-1978.
