Ryan Cohan Sextet to Perform “One Sky” at NEIU
WHAT: As part of the Performing Arts Series, Northeastern Illinois (NEIU) will present the Ryan Cohan Jazz Sextet in a program titled “One Sky” on Thursday, January 8 at 7:30 p.m.
Over the years, Cohan has worked with many jazz greats, including Ramsey Lewis. Since 1997, Cohan has written over a dozen compositions and arrangements that have appeared on four Lewis releases, including “Appassionata,” which was named “jazz album of the year” by Billboard Magazine in 2000. Ryan also has performed on tour with Ramsey and composed the theme song to “The Legends of Jazz” television program.
Cohan’s composition “One Sky” lands somewhere between outright jazz with straight ahead affectations and a classical, long-form exposition. The work, subtitled “Tone Poems For Humanity,” keeps listeners on the edge of their seats.
