Kalayil Named Northeastern Illinois University Distinguished Alumna
CHICAGO – Ann P. Kalayil, Ph.D., has been named Northeastern Illinois University’s 2012 Distinguished Alumna. The Northeastern Illinois University Distinguished Alumnus Award is the highest alumni honor the University bestows. It recognizes a particular achievement of note, a series of such achievements or a career of outstanding accomplishment.
Kalayil serves as regional administrator of the U.S. General Services Administration’s Great Lakes Region. Kalayil’s appointment in 2011 is historic as she is the first woman to serve as regional administrator of the GSA in this region.
Prior to this appointment, Kalayil worked for more than 18 years at the University of Chicago in information technology services, where she worked in emerging technologies and communications. Kalayil has taught interdisciplinary courses on Asian Americans at DePaul University, Loyola University Chicago, and the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Kalayil earned her bachelor's degrees in political science from the University of Illinois at Chicago and computer science from Northeastern Illinois University. She earned her master's degree in Asian studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Kalayil is active in many community and civic activities dealing with education policy, campaign finance reform, immigration reform, and documenting Asian American history. A Leadership Greater Chicago fellow, Kalayil has served on several government task forces and has participated in many panel discussions. She is the co-director of the South Asian American Policy & Research Institute and a member of many community-based organizations.
