Northeastern Illinois University Invites Undocumented Immigrants to Deferred Action Application Workshops
As a follow up to the DREAM Relief Day event held on Aug. 15 at Navy Pier, Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) will be hosting two Deferred Action Application Workshops at its El Centro campus, 3119 N. Pulaski Rd. in Chicago. Lawyers and volunteers will be available to meet with individuals and provide counsel.
The workshops will be held Sept. 22 and Oct. 13 with sessions from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. both days. Each session is limited to only 50 registrants, serving 100 individuals each day. The events are meant to support all undocumented immigrants and are not limited to any specific population.
"These workshops are open to all DREAMers regardless of their ethnicity," explained Maria Luna-Duarte, interim director of El Centro at Northeastern Illinois University.
Luna-Duarte added that the Deferred Action Application Workshops have been in the planning stages for a while. She said it was clear these workshops were a necessity after seeing how many people were not able to get their questions answered at the DREAM Relief Day at Navy Pier.
"We want each individual to walk away from these workshops with information and advisement on what is best for their specific situation," said Claudia Mercado, director of admissions at Northeastern Illinois University.
The University has partnered with the Logan Square Neighborhood Association, Legal Assistance Foundation, Undocumented Resilient and Organized (URO), the National Lawyers Guild and the Law Offices of Katherine A. Greenslade, and the NEIU Foundation to ensure these workshops are informative and educational.
