Northeastern Illinois University Board of Trustees Elects New Officers
Chicago - The Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) Board of Trustees elected new officers at its meeting earlier this month. Carlos Azcoitia will serve as chairman, Jin Lee will serve as vice chairman, and Grace Dawson will serve as secretary.
Azcoitia, a member of the NEIU Board of Trustees since 2006, currently is an assistant professor in educational leadership at National-Louis University. He is a former principal of the John Spry Community School and throughout his career has served the Chicago Public Schools in various teaching and administrative positions including Deputy Chief Education Officer from 1997-2003. In 2004 he was appointed by the governor to the Education Accountability Taskforce of school administrators to help shape a new Illinois Department of Education. He earned a B.A. from the University of Puerto Rico, an M.Ed. from National-Louis University, and an Ed.D. from Northern Illinois University.
Lee, a member of the NEIU Board of Trustees since 2005, has been director of business planning and development for the Albany Park Community Center since 1997. Previously he served as executive director of the Chicago Korean American Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the Human Relations Task Force of Chicago and a member of the Asian American Advisory Councils for the Illinois Secretary of State and the Illinois State Treasurer.
Dawson, a member of the NEIU Board of Trustees since 2007, has served the Chicagoland area for more than 50 years as an educator. She is a retired faculty member of the educational leadership and development department at NEIU and has also taught or worked with teacher education students at numerous colleges and universities in the region. Her commitment to urban education is evident from the many years she served as a principal or teacher in the Chicago Public Schools and in Gary, Ind. Dawson earned a B.A from Roosevelt University, an M.Ed. from Chicago State University, and a Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University.
