Music Department Earns NASM Accreditation
After years of preparation and review, the NEIU music department has been granted accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). NASM is the national accrediting agency for music and music-related disciplines and includes approximately 625 schools of music.
The NASM accreditation process focuses on two principal concerns: educational quality and institutional probity. The review of educational quality is made according to nationally recognized standards developed by the association and its member institutions in consultation with various professional groups in the field of music. The review of probity is made by determining whether the institution is indeed providing the educational services it says it is offering to the public and whether its own stated operational procedures are being followed.
Shayne Cofer, chair, music, said, “While accreditation is a great accomplishment, it just reaffirms what I already knew: The department of music at NEIU should have been accredited years ago. We’ve had quality programs and outstanding faculty and students for quite sometime.”
Cofer added that the department began the process of applying for accreditation in 2003. He said, “It was an arduous task at times, but well worth the effort. We finally have the stamp of approval from NASM, which affirms the quality of programs found in the department of music at NEIU.”
