About Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh Servant Leaders Hall Campaign
Northeastern Illinois University is privileged to embark on a historic campaign to name a student hall after the late democratic leader of Iran, Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh. In honor of Dr. Mossadegh’s demonstrated commitment to serving the interests of Iranian people as an exemplary world leader, the hall will be named Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh Servant Leaders Hall. Indeed, a servant leaders hall adorned by Dr. Mossadegh’s name at Northeastern, will inspire thousands of students in serving their communities, nations and the world as future leaders and will serve as an international beacon in honor of Dr. Mossadegh’s humanitarian ideals and legacy.
Over the past two years, Northeastern representatives have been in close consultation with community members about launching this historic campaign and they have been encouraged by the strong promise of active support. Moreover, Northeastern is most grateful to the respected grandsons of Dr. Mossadegh, Dr. Hedayatollah Matin-Daftary and Mr. Majid Bayat, for giving their permission for this naming.
Northeastern enjoys a well-established tradition with respect to paying tribute to the democratic and humanitarian legacy of Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh. In May 2001, Northeastern hosted the landmark conference of Mossadegh and the Future of Iran in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Dr. Mossadegh’s premiership. In a historic act, George Ryan, then governor of Illinois, proclaimed May 2, 2001 as Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh Day in Illinois. In the proclamation he paid tribute to Dr. Mossadegh by writing: “WHEREAS, Mohammad Mossadegh, Mahatma Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela are national heroes for Iran, India, and South Africa, as well as international symbols of perseverance and civility and advocates of justice and democracy…” In 2003, Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh Leadership Fund at Northeastern Illinois University was established as the first and only university-based fund for scholarship and programming in Dr. Mossadegh’s name throughout the world.
Leadership and Support of the Community
Based on this well established tradition, Northeastern requests and seeks the support and active participation of the Iranian community and its leaders in the world and especially in the United States for founding the first and only university based student hall in the world after Dr. Mossadegh.
