STP 2007 Mural
Northeastern Illinois University - El Centro Summer Transition Program Mural 2007
The Summer Transition Program is a six-week program designed to prepare high school graduates for a successful transition to the University. STP is offered at the Main Campus (5500 N. St. Louis Ave), the Jacobs Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (700 E. Oakwood) and NEIU-El Centro (3119 N. Pulaski Road). The STP at NEIU-El Centro is an evening program (M-F, 4-9pm), which prepares students for the fall semester. STP participants enroll in two college-level courses, participate in academic workshops, team building exercises, cultural off-campus events, and career related activities.
Christina, Emma, Leticia, Ricardo, Sherry, Elsy, Denny, Christopher, Claudia, Crystal, Miguel, Cristin, Christine, Aldo, Jamira, Daniel, Faviola, and Estela are the names of the STP class of 2007. These students stretched out on the floor, got paint on their clothes, and put their feelings, thoughts, and emotions on a canvas. They were empowered to use their creativity to express their Latino pride, their hopes for themselves, their community, and their world. The mural sends a message of peace, freedom, and equality. In addition to learning the mural process, students learned about teamwork and leadership under the guidance and direction of local artist, Victor MontaƱez.
