Student Success Series: Understanding the Art and Process of Notetaking Tuesday, September 20, 2011 5:30 pm - 6:05 pm This workshop will help students structure useful notes. In addition, how to successfully use those notes in a learning maintenance schedule will be discused. A short lecture to practice the Cornell System of Notetaking will be given. Autism Awareness Seminar Wednesday, September 21, 2011 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Please join State Representative Maria A. “Toni” Berrios and The Autism Program for Illinois [TAP] for an Autism Awareness Seminar. Local residents will have an opportunity to learn more about autism and the resources available to families. Parents will also have a chance to speak with other parents of children with autism and representatives from local and state agencies. This event is free and open to the public. Latino Scholar Series - Ann Avilez de Bradley, Ph.D. Homeless Educational Policy: Implications for students of color in Chicago Public Schools. Thursday, October 6, 2011 6:30 pm-7:30 pm There are an estimated 1.5 million children and youth experiencing homelessness in the United States. As students experiencing homelessness in Chicago continues to rise, this presentation will explore the implications of McKinney-Vento policy in the context of Chicago Public Schools. Student Success Series: Learning Maintenance Tuesday, October 18, 2011 5:30 pm - 6:05 pm This workshop focuses on developing the activities and behaviors that maintain a student’s learning in a course. Students can cram and often pass exams, but do they become any wiser or more knowledgeable? This workshop will focus on how to become a student who builds knowledge to succeed in class and learn for a life time. Sponsored by: NEIU-El Centro Campus and Learning Center.

NEIU-El Centro Campus Spirit Week Tuesday, October 25, 2011 to Thursday, October 27, 2011 NEIU-El Centro is celebrating Spirit Week the last week of October. Students are invited to show their NEIU spirit during the week. Students are also encouraged to get together with friends/classmates to join a team and participate in the following activities:
• Monday, October 24th –Pick up your pumpkin for the pumpkin carving contest • Tuesday, October 25th –Window painting/ Spirit Day- wear NEIU colors. • Wednesday, October 26th – Pumpkins are due/ Window painting and 50’s/60’s/70’s and 80’s tribute • Thursday, October 27th – Window painting, Haunted House and costume contest (judging will take place at 5:30-6:00 pm). • Saturday, October 28th – Winning team will be announced The more activities teams participate in the more points they will earn for their teams. Día De Los Muertos [Day of the Dead] Celebración: Altar de Muertos Contest Thursday, October 14, 2011 –Saturday, November 5, 2011 In celebration of el Día de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), several NEIU’s Programs will participate in a competition for the best Día de los Muertos altar. The altars will be on display at NEIU-El Centro Campus (3119 N Pulaski Rd, Chicago, Illinois 60641). NEIU students, faculty and staff are invited to visit and vote for their favorite one. Winners will be announced during the week of November 5, 2011.

Sueños de Papel – Art Exhibit by Alma Domínguez Opening Reception: Friday, November 18, 2011 5:00 am - 9:00 pm Art will be in display from Friday, November 18, 2011 – Friday, December 16, 2011 Alma Domínguez has a background in Psychology and a Masters in Social Sciences, both of which strongly influenced her artwork. Her work is usually done on paper and mixed media, predominantly watercolors and acrylic. Sponsored by: NEIU-El Centro Campus.
