Tuesday, September 29, 2009 Improving Your Writing Series Part I: Getting Off to a Good Start 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm This workshop will help students understand assignments and generate ideas for writing. A number of prewriting strategies will be explored. The important link between reading and writing will also be discussed. Sponsored by: NEIU-El Centro and the English Language Program.

Monday, October 5, 2009 Latino Scholar Series – María Teresa Garretón, Ph.D., NEIU Teacher Education 6:10 pm-7:10 pm Dr. Garreton will talk about her work developing partnerships with schools and teachers to improve the educational opportunities of all children, particularly those of English language learners. Dr. Garreton’s lecture will also focus on her involvement in the Grow Your Own Teachers Illinois initiative. The Grow Your Own Teachers initiative’s goal is to bring together universities, community based organizations, and schools to work together and design teacher preparation programs which meet the needs of the community and improve teacher retention. Thursday, October 8, 2009 Hispanic Heritage: Storming the Gates: The Struggle for Access to Higher Education in Illinois 6:20 pm – 7:20 pm NEIU-El Centro campus presents the documentary "Storming the Gates: The Entrance of Blacks & Latinos to Higher Education in Illinois" followed by a panel discussion led by Dr. Angelina Pedroso, Foreign Languages and Literatures, Dr. Gabriel Cortez, Educational Leadership and Development, and Dr. Daniel López, Jr., ILACHE Board Member, NEIU-El Centro and Academic Development. The documentary traces the history of how minorities gained admission into major academic institutions in Illinois. Wednesday, October 14, 2009 15th Annual Equity In Action Conference Unequal Justice: Immigration Myth and Policy According to Migrants 6:10 pm – 7:10 pm This session will provide an in-depth analysis of immigration policies and its connection to human rights. A discussion related to challenges for a just immigration policy reform will also be outlined. The presenters will be Dr. Maria Eugenia De La Torre, Assistant Professor, Justice Studies, Northeastern Illinois University and Carlos Arango, Executive Director of Caza Aztlan, Chicago. We will then focus on the nature and importance of revising, and students will be presented with a series of helpful suggestions on transforming a first draft into a more fully realized piece of writing. Monday, October 26, 2009 to Friday, October 30, 2009 NEIU-EL Centro Spirit Week NEIU-El Centro is celebrating Spirit Week the last week of October. Students are invited to show their NEIU spirit during the week. Students are also encouraged to get together with friends/classmates to join a team and participate in the following activities: · Tuesday, October 27 – Window painting · Wednesday, October 28 – Window painting, costume contest (judging will take place at 5:30), and wear NEIU colors day · Thursday, October 29 – Window painting, pumpkin-carving contest
The more activities teams participate in, the more the points they will earn for their teams. The team with the most points will be the winner of Spirit Week and will receive a trophy. Saturday, November 28, 2009 Community Education Program: Making Home Affordable 11:00 am – 12:00 pm This two-hour session will focus on making homes affordable in our community, the new government program set forth by the Obama administration to address issues of homeownership and foreclosure in the United States. Counselors from Latin United Community Housing Association (LUCHA) will explain, answer questions, and illustrate ways in which the plan may help at-risk borrowers afford their mortgage payments.
