THE ELEMENTARY EDUCATION PROGRAM



Program Overview

The Elementary Education program offers a course of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree with Illinois Type 03 entitlement.  The major in Elementary Education is planned to provide students with substantial knowledge of philosophical and psychological elements of teaching and learning, general and specific methods of instruction, and clinical experiences in local schools prior to completing a student teaching program.

In order to graduate from the program and qualify for state certification, students must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours of study which include the following requirements:
 

   39 credit hours of university general education course work.
   39 credit hours of professional education
   18 credit hours of additional requirements for state certification
   18 to 24 hours in minor area of study
 
 

Students must take a minimum of 18 hours in a minor.  A minor meets the state certification requirement provided that at least nine hours are taken at the 300-level.  Approved minors are listed below:

   All university general education requirements must be completed within 75 hours.  The pass/fail option may not be used for any ELED professional sequence requirements.

   Students may use no more than six hours of "D" to meet the requirements in general education.

   Students who require developmental courses in reading or mathematics must take the indicated courses during their first 30 hours in residence.  Students who have not completed their development courses may not begin their major course work.

   A GPA of 2.75 in the professional sequence and a recommendation from an ELED faculty member is required in order to student teach.  Professional sequence courses may not be taken more than twice to achieve an acceptable grade.

   Student teaching is a full-day, five days a week schedule for 16 weeks.  All incompletes in a major must be changed to a grade prior to student teaching.
