Overview of Departmental Programs

The Teacher Education Department encompasses seven programs of study in preservice and inservice teacher preparation involving approximately 1600 students at undergraduate and graduate levels.  Each undergraduate program of study involves coursework in educational  history and philosophy, educational psychology, and pedagogy, as well as extensive field-based experiences at public and parochial schools located in the Chicago Metropolitan area. Graduate programs focus on concentrated study in the areas of teaching and learning.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS:

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION   The Early Childhood Education Program prepares teachers of children from birth to 8 years of age for all areas of the curriculum, with Illinois Type 04 entitlement.

   ELEMENTARY EDUCATION   This program prepares teachers of children from kindergarten to ninth grade for all areas of the elementary curriculum, with Illinois Type 03 entitlement.

   BILINGUAL/BICULTURAL EDUCATION   In this program teacher candidates complete a major in Bilingual/ Bicultural Education along with a major in Elementary Education. Graduates from this program have State of Illinois approval to teach in elementary bilingual classrooms/Type 04 entitlement with Bilingual approval.

SECONDARY EDUCATION    The Secondary Education Program prepares teachers of children in grades 6 -12.  Northeastern Illinois University offers Secondary Education majors in the following areas:  Art, Biology, English, History, Mathematics, Music (K-12), Physical Education, and Spanish.

GRADUATE  PROGRAMS:

   BILINGUAL/BICULTURAL   This program involves graduate study leading to a master's degree in the area of bilingual/bicultural education for both preservice Master of Arts in Teaching Program/with Type 03 entitlement) and inservice teachers (Master of Science in Instruction Program/master's degree only).  Graduates of both degrees will have State of Illinois approval to teach in a bilingual elementary classroom.
           Master of  Arts in Teaching (with certification)
           Master of Science in Instruction (without certification)
 

   LANGUAGE ARTS   In this program, coursework leads to a master's degree in the area of literacy and English acquisition.  There are two types of degrees offered:
           Master of Arts in Teaching (with Illinois Type 03 or 09 entitlement):  Language Arts
           Master of Science in Instruction:  Language Arts
            Within these two degrees, there are specific course sequences for elementary and secondary teachers.
 

TEACHER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM FOR POST BACCALAUREATE STUDENTS (TCP)
             This program is designed for returning students with degrees in fields other than education who wish to obtain teaching certification in the following areas:

            Early Childhood Education - Type 04 Entitlement, Birth - Grade 3
            Elementary Education - Type 03 Entitlement, Grades K - 9
            Secondary Education - Type 09 Entitlement, Grades 6 - 12
            (Art, Biology, English, History, Mathematics, Physical Education, Spanish)
            Music Education, Standard Special Entitlement, Grades K -12
