Casting a show at the Stage Center Theatre

The STAGE CENTER THEATRE has a longstanding tradition of open casting.  Roles for all of our productions are open to all students, faculty, and staff, as well as residents of the greater Chicagoland area.  In recent years we have included actors from the non-union off-loop theatre community.  The idea is to provide an opportunity for students to work side-by-side and learn from working professionals.

Notice to Off-Loop non-union actors

The theatre program within the Department of Communication, Media and Theatre is a liberal arts program serving the whole university community. Since the beginning, the program has had an open casting policy, which means roles are open students, faculty, staff and people from the Chicago area. Typically, we find that Off-Loop actors are motivated to audition for roles in the university productions to get the opportunity to play specific roles or to add more evidence of experience to their resumes.

In recent years we have placed notice of auditions in Performink and on the hotline. We do this for two reasons:

  1. Mixing Off-Loop actors with student actors allows us to mount a wider variety of productions.
  2. Casting Off-Loop actors provides an invaluable opportunity for our students to work side-by-side with professionals in the centuries old tradition of learning directly from actors with more training and experience.

Roles in productions during fall and spring semesters are non-paying.  Roles in the summer theatre productions sometimes receive stipends
