                          Learning Behavior Specialist I

     

The LBSI Master's Program is not exclusively a certification program.

You must complete the entire program to attain certification.



 
Admission Requirements  
  Bachelor’s Degree
  Minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale
  Passing score on the Illinois Test of Basic Skills (To register, click on this website: www.icts.nesinc.com )
  Two letters of recommendation

Advisement
You are assigned an advisor after you are accepted into the program.
You will initally meet your advisor at the Program Orientation held in June
Please schedule your first meeting with your advisor within the first year of the program.

  You may call the Graduate College at 773-442-6005 to request an application packet
  You may visit the Graduate College in Building B, Room 159 and pick up a packet

Application
Due Date

  Applications are due in the Graduate College Office by the third week in February for Fall admission and the third week in August for spring Admission.
  The Special Education Department accepts students during the spring for enrollment in summer and fall classes

Financial Assistance

  Call the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) at 1-800-899-4722 and ask about any financial aid available for Special Education students.
  The Graduate College offers Merit Tuition Waivers for one class per semester. You must apply every semester for this waiver

Program Structure
 
  Total number of hours: 45
  Total number of classes: 16 (including 6 internships)
  Classes are taken within blocks as they provide knowledge base for the subsequent blocks
  Classes meet:
    ° Fall and Spring Semesters at 4:15 P.M. or 7:05 P.M.  
    ° Summer session in one of 3 summer sessions ( 13 week summer session and two 6 ½ week summer sessions) at 4:00 P.M. or 6:00 P.M.

Student-At-Large
 
  You are allowed to bring up to 9 credit hours into your program: including classes you have taken before admission to the program, transfered credits and waived credits.
  You may contact the Admissions Office at 773-442-4000 to request an application as a Student at Large with Degree or you may apply on-line at www.neiu.edu

Student Teaching         Fill out an application which you will find in the Special Education Office:
                           Fall placement: Apply by January 30
                           Spring placement: Apply by April 30

Material to be submitted with this application are:
              A photocopy of your letter from the Graduate College granting candidacy
              A photocopy of your passing results of your LBSI exam
              Update of TB test if necessary
              Resume & philosophy of education (same as was submitted for the Intership)
              Unofficial transcript

FOR THOSE WHO ARE ALREADY CERTIFIED TEACHERS:
               No additional materials are required to be submitted with this application.
               You will be fulfilling your 514 requirements in the Itkin Children's Center under the supervision of Dr. Gerardo Mareno.
