Professional Interests
My current research involves understanding the intra-occupational segregation of the medical profession. My focus generally concerns analyzing the determinants of medical specialization in order to better comprehend the lack of gender and racial/ethnic diversity across medical specialties. In my master’s thesis I argue two types of Black physicians emerge within the medical profession, the status-oriented Black physician and the community-oriented Black physician. Both types of Black physicians have high aspirations, I argue, as evident by their determination to overcome reported racial discrimination operating within the medical school, yet they have very different goals. My dissertation involves the utilization of qualitative methodologies to support my general claim.
