Circulation Policies & Services FAQ

Who may borrow books?
All students, faculty, staff, and alumni from NEIU, or individuals from other I-Share institutions with a current and valid photo ID may borrow library materials. If you are not affiliated with NEIU and are not sure if your institution belongs to I-Share, go to the I-Share Catalog and click on the I-Share Libraries tab at the top of the screen.

How long can I borrow books?
Books and government documents circulate for a four week period. Special types of material, including books in the New Book Area, have various loan periods.

What does not circulate?
Periodicals, journals, newspapers, reference books, tests, curriculum guides, microforms and some government documents do not circulate.

Can I borrow books located in the New Book Area on the 1st Floor of the Library?
Circulating materials located in the New Book Area can be borrowed for a period of 2 weeks and only one renewal is allowed. Reference books in the New Book Area do not circulate.

How many items can I borrow?
There is no limit to the number of items you may check out from the general collection or the New Book Area. For special materials from the Curriculum Materials Center, there is a limit of ten for each material type.

Can I renew materials?
Most materials can be renewed four times, as long as the material is not needed by someone else. Teacher's Resource items, AV items, Records, Audio Cassettes and Videos may be renewed one time. Eight items or less may be renewed by telephone. You may also renew your own materials, online, through your Borrower record. Items being renewed may not be overdue. Books borrowed from the New Book Area can be renewed one time as long as the material is not needed by someone else.

What if I can't find what I'm looking for?
Come to the Circulation Desk and ask that the item be searched and a hold placed on it. If you can't wait, you can check out materials with your current Northeastern ID at another I-Share library. Materials not owned by NEIU may be requested online through the I-Share catalog or via ILLiad Interlibrary Loan system. Additional information on locating and borrowing materials is available on the Interlibrary Loan page.

What about books not owned by NEIU?
Requests for books not owned by NEIU may be placed via the I-Share Catalog. Please check NEIU's holdings in the NEIU Library Catalog before placing requests. Requests for books which are owned by NEIU will not be honored. The requestor will be notified by phone or email if the item is located in the NEIU stacks.

What are the fines?
Books and other materials that circulate for 4 weeks:

There is a 27 day grace period for items that circulate for 4 weeks. After an item is 14 days overdue a notice is sent as a reminder to return or renew items before a fine is incurred. A fine of $5.00 per item is owed 28 days past the due date. An invoice will be generated for the replacement cost of an item plus a $2.00 per item processing fee when an item is 29 days past the due date.

There is a $5.00 fine on a recalled item held more than 14 days past recall notification. The maximum overdue fine is $5.00 per item.

Books from the New Book Area and other materials that circulate for less than 4 weeks:

There is a 2 day grace period for items that circulate for less than 4 weeks. This includes books from the New Book Area, videos, DVDs and other special library materials.

What if I lose a book?
You will be charged for the replacement cost of the book, a $2.00 processing fee and a $5.00 fine or you may donate an acceptable replacement copy and pay the $5.00 fine. Please contact the Circulation Desk to verify and approve the replacement copy you are donating before purchasing it yourself.

Do these policies apply to Reserve materials?
