By the end of today's class, you should be able to do the following:

v Properties of Porous Materials:

Define the following terms, using appropriate units of measurement: porosity, effective porosity, specific yield, specific retention, hydraulic conductivity.
Write formulas defining each of the properties in terms of volumes and in terms of the other properties.
Characterize rocks and sediments in terms of their porosity, effective porosity, specific yield, and specific retention, giving typical ranges of values of these properties for each type of rock and sediment.

v Debriefing previous classes' activities:

Discuss the meaning/importance/concepts of the exercise on water levels in wells.
In small groups, discuss the responses to the assessment question on transferring water from a rain barrel to a trash bin.

v Properties of Porous Materials: Define these properties of porous materials: porosity, effective porosity, specific yield, specific retention. Write formulas to express each quantity. Write a formula that relates specific retention and specific yield to porosity.
