PRINCIPLES OF HYDROGEOLOGY
ESCI 337
Spring, 2004

Homework #5 (Due Tuesday, March 2, 2004)                                                                                                        Sanders

The Assignment:
Use geologic maps and documents to investigate the study area for this semester's project, and write a brief (2-3 pages, typed, double-spaced) summary of the topography and geology of the area.

t The project study area is the area surrounding two community water supply well, located as follows:

Well #10: Twp 38N, Range 8E, Section 33, Plot 4h.  (This well is 82 ft deep.)
Well #11: Twp 38N, Range 8E, Section 33, Plot 5h.  (This well is 59 ft deep.)

t Your investigation should use the following sources, plus any other sources you decide to consult:

-- 7.5 minute topographic maps of the area
-- "Geologic Map of Illinois"  (hanging on classroom wall)
-- "Quaternary Deposits of Illinois" map (hanging on classroom wall)
-- "Summary of the Geology of the Chicago Area" (Willman, 1971)
-- "Hydrogeology of Shallow Groundwater Resources, Kane County, Illinois" (Curry and Seaber, 1990)
-- "Stack-Unit Mapping of Geologic Materials in Illinois to a depth of 15 Meters"  (Berg and Kempton, 1988)
-- "Buried Bedrock Surface of Illinois" (Herzog and others, 1994) or "Glacial Drift in Illinois: Thickness and Character" (Piskin and Bergstrom, 1975)
-- Documents from the Environmental Geology Notes series on Superconducting Super Collider, for example, "Geological-geotechnical Studies for Siting the Superconducting Super Collider in Illinois: regional Summary (Graese and others, 1988)

t These materials will be located in Room S-130.  Please put them back immediately after using them, so that others will have access to them.  Note: they are not to leave the departmental area.  If you wish to take them into S-124 or S-120 while you are working, please leave a note on the door/window to S-130 telling people where they are.

t On the basis of what you learn about the study area through your investigations into these maps and documents, write a brief (2-3 pages, typed, double-spaced) summary of the topography and geologic conditions in the study area.

t  Hand in one paper per group.  Clearly show which group role was filled by each group member.  (Be sure that all group members have a copy of the file, since we may yet be changing groups.)
