Summer Session, 2004

Using Improvisational Acting Techniques with Counseling Clients. (3 CEU's). This workshop is an experientially based introduction to the use of improvisational acting techniques to assist counseling clients in their ability to express their personal challenges This will be a "hands on" workshop so dress comfortable, and come prepared to practice! This workshop has a limit of 20 students - first 20 registrations will honored.

Introduction to Clinical Hypnosis. (6 CEU's). This is an introduction to the use of clinical hypnosis in individual and group settings. The focus will be on basic hypnotic induction, rather than on suggestion formation. The participant will be provided with several "scripts" to use with clients. This workshop will also cover the ethical issues involved in the use of hypnosis. This will be a "hands on" workshop so dress comfortable, and come prepared to practice! This workshop has a limit of 20 students - first 20 registrations will honored.

A focus and discussion on both individual child-centered play therapy, group play therapy, and play therapy with families will present clinicians with several vehicles of practice.This workshop has a limit of 20 students - first 20 registrations will honored.

Crisis Intervention: Responding to Crisis Situations in the Clinical Setting. (3 CEU's).  This workshop will begin the process of training for potential crises that the United States faces today.  Crises by their very nature can leave therapists feeling uncomfortable and unsure of their responses.  Common types of crises that clients present with in clinical settings will be explored, and specific interventions and techniques will be reviewed and discussed in an interactive format.

Motivational Interviewing: Creating Change Through Collaboration (6 CEU's).  This workshop explains the theory and techniques of Motivational Interviewing, as developed by Dr. Wm. Miller and Steve Rollnick.  Motivational Interviewing is a philosophy and a counseling technique. This technique will enhance any clinical practice, and is perfect for those working with mandated clients, i.e., those in substance abuse programs.  Interactive role-playing and practice will help skill acquisition.

Sex Therapy and Human Sexuality Counseling - Primer ( 6 CEU's). Counselors' clients face a variety of issues related to human sexuality.  Some believe all they need to cure their sexual woes is Viagra.  In this session common issues that emerge around human sexuality, and where the current therapy field stands in terms of treatment will be looked at.  Sexual issues that counselors can deal with, differentiation of physical from those connected to mental health issues, and techniques for providing sex therapy for specific sexual issues are a few of the topics this workshop will cover.

Using Voice Dialogue in Counseling (6 CEU's). This workshop is devoted to understanding the basic theory of Voice Dialogue and the Psychology of Selves (Stone and Stone).  Voice Dialogue is a counseling technique used to identify, access, and work with sup-personalities (selves/parts/complexes/voices). By creating awareness, the client is empowered with the possibility of choices.  Participants will have the opportunity to bring some of their won primary sub personalities to awareness and facilitate this process for others.

Visualization Techniques in Counseling (6 CEU's). An introduction to work in visualization including several techniques, but primarily guided imagery.  Stilling the mind, stress reduction, "centering," preparing for tasks where anxiety exists, goal setting, practice/seeing oneself successful in the mind, and accessing the facets of the unconscious are among the images used.

Multicultural Case Consultation (2 CU's per session). Multicultural clinical competency includes awareness and knowledge of cultural factors, awareness of the therapist’s cultural identity, and culturally appropriate skills.  Many training opportunities and workshops focus on developing awareness and knowledge, but do not concentrate on skill development.  This case consultation group will provide the opportunity for skill development specific to multicultural counseling.  If you have a diverse caseload, and are looking for assistance in developing or enhancing culturally sensitive techniques and interventions, this group is for you.  The training will focus on working with ethnically diverse clients, clients from various socioeconomic backgrounds, diverse spiritual or religious beliefs, etc. Professionals who could utilize this group: Professional Counselors, Social Workers, Psychologists, Marriage and Family Therapists, Human Service Professionals with previous cultural diversity training.

Issues of isomorphic and parallel processes, developmental stages of both clinicians and supervisors, and learning styles will be covered. New research and practice related to developing counselor competency and self-efficacy will be presented. This workshop is for the already practicing supervisor as well as those who are interested in developing supervision as a specialty.

When the Helper Hurts:  Compassion Fatigue & Burnout (3 CU's)
Counselors come to their work filled with passion and excitement. Continually working with others problems can’t help but have an effect on our world view.  This presentation will address the effect of compassion fatigue, countertransference and burnout on our ability to be present for our clients - and take care of ourselves. Program Goal: To help counselors develop a personal awareness of limits and emotional triggers that can cause compassion fatigue and burnout and allow them to
 develop a personal action plan for prevention.

College Counseling Basics for the Secondary School Counselor  (6 CEU's)
        If you are planning to work in a high school setting, either private or public, a thorough understanding of the issues and protocol in the high-school-to-college transition process will be asked of you.  This workshop will cover the major topics and skills required of the high school counselor: the college search process, testing and test preparation, application protocol and required materials, writing letters of recommendation, legal and ethical issues, and financial aid.  Special consideration will be given to the varying factors involved in highly competitive college admission.  Written materials will be provided for reference.  Case studies will be provided.   The instructor for this workshop has 14 years of college admissions experience in both academic and arts settings.

Developing Multicultural Awareness and Sensitivity (6 CEU's). This workshop will help participants to develop cultural sensitivity and an understanding of cultural factors on their own functioning and the functioning of individuals. Specifically, the workshop will discuss worldview, racial and ethnic identity, and other important cultural factors. The workshop will also include information on oppression, power, privilege, and the barriers to acceptance and respect of cultural differences, Exercises designed to increase cultural sensitivity and provide information will be included. Finally, the workshop will include ways to develop cross-cultural relationships and skills for services.

Clinical Issues with Hispanic/Latino clients (6CEU's).
This workshop explores the diversity of Hispanics in the United States and the implications of that diversity for clinical practice.  Misconceptions and misunderstandings of mental health issues among Hispanics are explored.  Also explored are reasons for underutilization and underrepresentation of Hispanics in the mental health delivery system.

Peace in the Classroom (45 CEU's). This professional development workshop/course focuses on peace in the classroom from a variety of perspectives: conflict resolution; the classroom, school, community and beyond; strategies for promoting inner peace and peace in the world; approaches to understanding anger and methods for dealing with one's own anger and the anger of others. This course will enable participants (and teachers in particular) to gain understanding and experience in an anger workshop, meditation, yoga, listening techniques, art therapy, service learning, a workshop on creativity, team building, and ways to use the Internet to develop understanding and promote peace in the classroom. Participants will learn to create an environment for peace that can be broadened to assist students in bringing peace into the world.

Counseling 499: Clinical Supervision(45 CEU's). This post-graduate course will examine clinical supervision theory and techniques currently used in counseling and psychotherapy, and introduce students to supervision as a specialty. Focusing on developmental issues of both supervisors and clinicians, this course will study methods that can be used to enhance counselor competency, and issues related to supervising multiple counseling models. PREREQUISITES: Graduate degree, or clinical experience as a supervisor with permission of the instructor. Students must have at least two supervisees they are currently supervising, as group and individual supervision-of- supervision will be a component of the class.

Dates: Summer Session, Friday Mornings, 9:00 - 1:00 May 21- August 12. Class meets the first 6 weeks, with individual appointments the second 6 weeks. Broken Trust: A Preventative and Educational Overview of Boundary Violations in the Therapist-Client Relationship (6 CEU's). The workshop provides an overview of the societal dilemma of abuse by mental health professionals. A format of education and prevention will aid participants in understanding the potential dangers of boundary violations, and their impact on the professional and the client. Material covered in the workshop includes a review of the literature of exploitation as it relates to the theory of abuse, laws regulating licensed psychotherapists, the complaint process, finding your vulnerable hook in the therapist-client relationship, and creating an awareness of the potential dangers of boundary violations.

Culturally Sensitive Treatment of African American Women (3 CEU's). African American women have a unique experience in this country due to the legacy of slavery and the continued interaction of racism, sexism, and classism. There are four stereotypes of African American women from slavery: Mammy, Jezebel, Sapphire, and Superwoman, that influence the development of self-esteem, ideals of beauty and body image, interpersonal relationships, and depression, and anxiety. This workshop will explore the racial and womanist identity, and the development of positive self-concept and self-esteem. Workshop participants will have a better understanding of the influence of racism, sexism, classism, develop culturally appropriate assessment skills and treatment techniques for African American women.

Fathering Accountability Certification Training (FACT) - An Experiential Workshop for Fathers and Service Providers (11 CEU's). This workshop will assist practitioners in developing a new specialty; will provide you with tools to empower your male clients to become more successful Fathers; will identify key knowledge and skills every successful Father must know; and identify major cultural and emotional blocks to healthy Fathering. As a Father, participants will rediscover the joy of fathering; create a Fathering Mission to revitalize your life; create action plans to maximize your fathering time; master key Fathering skills; honor your child's spirit (temperament); face what separates you from your children; deal with your internal blocks to Fathering; overcome your cultural conditioning; assess your masculine nurturer; and understand the different developmental needs of girls and boys.

Basic Psychodrama (3 CEU's). Psychodrama enhances spontaneity and encourages participants in experiencing and gaining insights. Desired changes becomes possible in action and blocks are often overcome. The intent of this half day workshop is to present the opportunity for practitioners and students to see how psychodrama works in action. Specific techniques will be presented to increase well-being and problem solving skills. Included will be an historic overview of psychodrama and some sociometry with a brief didactic presentation, then a demonstration of several techniques that can be 'take home skills' that can be used in both personal and business interactions. This will be both a practical and theoretical experience.
