Practicum II: Clinical Experience in
Couple and Family Counseling

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Practicum II: Clinical Experiences in Family Counseling consists of a minimum of 100 clock hours of supervised clinical experience in an appropriate setting. At least 50 of these hours are to be spent in direct service with clients. Practicum II is to be taken concurrently with Practicum I: Group Supervision in Family Counseling. This course contributes to the counseling proficiency component of the program and is required of all students in the family sequence.

PREREQUISITES

Master's degree candidacy in counseling, acceptance into the C/M &F sequence.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the clinical experiences are:

1. to provide the opportunity for students to work under supervision in an appropriate setting for a minimum of 100 on-site hours, 50 of which are to be in direct service to clients;

2. to review and expand students repertoire of systemic counseling skills used with individuals, couples and families;

3. to begin to put into practice the assessment and treatment planning strategies that have been learned in prior courses, including the concurrent Practicum I;

4. to integrate systemic counseling skills and to create strategies to assist clients;

5. to offer weekly individual supervision to the counselor-in- training.

CLINICAL COMPETENCIES

Students should demonstrate through clinical practice their understanding of the following:

1. The ethical guidelines of the ACA, IAMFC, IAMFT and AAMFT including stipulations regarding confidentiality, dual relationships, and professional disclosure.

2. The Illinois Confidentiality Act;

3. A systemic understanding of counseling techniques and practice with individuals, couples and families.

4. Assessment of clients from both an individual and a family systems perspective.

5. Use of genograms in clinical work.

6. Clinical competencies consistent with a systemic perspective, i.e.,

a. showing empathy and respect for the clients experience;

b. attending to larger systems issues and accessing resources appropriate for clients.

c. challenge one's own premises and biases, and show an appreciation for cultural, gender, spiritual and sexual diversity;

d. demonstrate an understanding and respect for multiple perspectives;

e. Conceptualize and describe clients dilemmas in a systemic and non pathologizing way.

f. develop co-created goals with clients and their respective parts;

g. demonstrate a family systems model that integrates a variety of therapeutic models, both systemic and traditional;

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Students are expected to:

1. Complete a minimum of 100 hours of on-sight supervised clinical experience, including 40 hours of direct service to clients;

2. Abide by policy of agency in which student is placed; (paperwork, follow up, legal and or referral issues, etc.);

3. Demonstrate professional behavior becoming of a counselor (attendance, punctuality, presentation of self);

4. Attend on site supervision sessions to focus on clinical, agency and larger systems issues;

5. Demonstrate their clinical competence as outlined above;

6. be introspective, open, and receptive to feedback.

SUPERVISION

Each clinical student will receive an average of one hour per week of individual supervision. A minimum of one supervisory sessions will be at the placement site and may include audio and video tapes of the student counseling couples and family clients.

EVALUATION

Students will receive mid-term and final evaluations from both the on-site and University supervisors, according to the criteria outlined on the Practicum Evaluation Form. It is understood that the clinical practicum grade will reflect the evaluation of both supervisors, but the University supervisor has the final responsibility for grade assignment.

Clinical credits toward C/M & F Preparation

Students successfully completing this course will have gained 100 hours of Practicum/Internship Credit of which 50 are to be face to face couple/marriage and family counseling. They will also have completed a minimum of 16 hours of on site individual supervision.
