
JOAN MARIE JOHNSON (Ph.D., UCLA). specializes in American Women’s history and Southern history. She is the author of Southern Ladies, New Women: Race, Region and Clubwomen in South Carolina, 1898-1930 (University Press of Florida, 2004) and the editor and author of the introduction to Southern Women at Vassar: The Poppenheim Family Letters, 1882-1916 (University of South Carolina Press, 2002). She has published articles on Southern women, race, reform, and education, and is currently co-editing a three volume historical anthology on South Carolina women. Her latest book, entitled Making Progressive Women in the South: Northern Colleges, Feminist Values, and Social Activism, is currently under review for publication.
