Master of Arts in Mathematics Program

Program Overview

This program is designed for teachers who wish to improve their level of competence in mathematics or wish to serve as Elementary School Mathematics Specialists, Coordinators of Elementary School Mathematics Programs, or Teachers of Junior High or Middle School Mathematics.

The MA program is mathematics-content oriented. Through the study of advanced mathematics, students gain an understanding of underlying concepts that will help improve their teaching of Mathematics.

Admission Requirements:

  1. Students must fulfill the requirements for admission to the Graduate College.

  2. Students must have a current Illinois Teaching Certificate for K-9 or equivalent.

  3. Students must have successfully completed 6 - 15 credit hours of College Mathematics content courses.

Degree Requirements: (Candidacy, Thesis, Project, and Comprehensive exam)

  1. Complete 30 credit hours of approved course work at the 400 level.

  2. Complete and pass a Comprehensive Final Examination in the five core courses. The Comprehensive Examination is offered twice per year, and may only be taken after satisfactory completion of the core courses.
